But, cheap seeds are much less expensive than established plants, allowing a gardener to buy many more of them and to try many new varieties. Wildflower varieties are generally cheap, grow into hardy plants, and come in a dazzling array of colors and sizes. Annual flower seeds also tend to be very inexpensive. In addition to using cheap seeds, keeping the flower garden cheap can mean finding alternative ways to nurture the garden. There are natural items that can enhance the garden without enhancing the price. While mulch is useful for insulating dormant flower seeds and keeping moisture in the ground, buying prepackaged mulch can be expensive. There are other items that can be used instead. Pine needles, for instance, make excellent mulch and can be gathered for free. Small rocks can be used as effective mulch as well. Larger rocks make a nice flower garden border instead of more costly bricks or borders.  Planting a flower garden cheaply can also be done by relying more on nature and less on technology.

Once the cheap seeds have been sown, there are many other ways to keep the flower garden flourishing inexpensively. Using found and natural objects can help nurture the flower seeds without adding extra expense. Mulch made of pine bark and other types of wood are standard for many flower gardens, but there are other things that can be just as helpful. The use of pine needles as mulch is a good way to keep the soil moist and weeds from growing in the garden. And, instead of paying for an expensive brick border around a flower bed, large rocks enhance the natural look of the garden and will cost nothing.  Many flower gardens are expensive to maintain because they rely too much on technology instead of allowing the environment to assist the flower seeds and plants.

A flower garden is an ecosystem unto itself. Making sure that effective and helpful insects are allowed to help maintain that ecosystem eliminates a few expenses all by itself. Insecticides kill bugs that can help to pollinate plants- requiring the purchase of more flower seeds. Organic gardening is a way to help ensure that plants stay as healthy as possible in order to resist plant disease. Organic gardening can help flower seeds to reach their full potential by making sure the soil is nutrient rich. Herbicides can also hinder the natural balance of the flower garden. When planting flower seeds, especially wildflower seeds, herbicides can harm the fragile seats and young plants. Using mulch to keep the weeds out is much cheaper and easier on the overall garden ecosystem. Allowing insects into the garden assures that harmful insects will eventually be eaten by helpful insects.

Keeping a garden healthy and blooming does not require the use of expensive chemicals.  Many gardeners believe that herbicides and insecticides will help flowers and flower seeds to grow. However, insects are a natural part of a plants environment, and there are many insects that help a garden to flourish. Killing pollinating insects means that the flowering plants cannot cross pollinate. This may result in fewer seeds being left behind. Allowing the plants to leave their own seeds in the garden means there will be fewer seeds to purchase in the future. For people planting wildflower seeds in their gardens, herbicides may kill the very plants they are intending to grow. Natural mulch used in a flower garden will prevent many weeds from taking root, and for much less costs than buying commercial herbicides.
